RateInfo.ca provides unbiased, free aggregation of GIC rates from Canadian financial institutions. Our mission is to offer transparent, accessible information to help consumers make informed investment decisions. We present current GIC rates without bias or compensation from financial institutions.

GIC Types

RateInfo.ca aggregates rates for various GIC types:

  • Regular GICs: Traditional fixed-rate GICs that provide a guaranteed interest rate for a specified term
  • Market Growth GICs: Market-linked GICs where returns are tied to market performance, typically with a minimum guaranteed return and potential for higher returns based on market conditions
  • Foreign Currency GICs: GICs denominated in currencies other than Canadian dollars, such as US dollars
  • Cashable GICs: GICs that can be cashed in before maturity, usually penalty-free after a waiting period
  • Redeemable GICs: GICs that can be redeemed early, usually with specific terms and conditions regarding interest payments

Coverage is regularly expanded to include additional financial institutions.

Limitations

We do not usually aggregate variable rate GICs, such as escalating GICs, or GICs with promotional bonuses that enhance the base rate for only part of the GIC term (e.g., a bonus percentage added to the base rate for the first 90 days of a multi-year GIC), as these products have complex rate structures that vary based on specific conditions and terms that are difficult to compare directly.

Cashable and redeemable products usually have unique terms around how money can be withdrawn early and what the penalties are. These terms vary by financial institution and product and are not something we currently aggregate. Always review the specific terms and conditions with the financial institution before making an investment decision.

We do not display when interest is paid out, e.g annually, at maturity, monthly, or semi-annually. Interest payment frequency varies by product and financial institution and is not generally a deciding factor for most people.
